India and Sri Lanka enjoy a strong and friendly relationship based on cultural and traditional values for years. This relationship has evolved into significant Economic and Commercial partnership. The two neighbours have entered a new era of co-operation with trade relations being further enhanced to tap the immense potential that exists. India 's Exports of Gem & Jewellery to Sri Lanka have increased by 41%in the year 2005-06 as compared to previous year. The major contributor to this growth was Cut &Polished diamond exports that touched US$3.76 mn in the year 2005-06. India 's import from Srilanka in this sector constitutes of rough diamonds, rough colour gemstones &raw pearls. India 's import touched US$0.44 mn in the year 2005-06.
With this background where India can look at sourcing color stones directly from Sri Lanka the GJEPC proposed a six member Delegation to Sri Lanka led by Mr. Mahesh Rao,Convener – Gold Jewellery Panel Committee, Gem &Jewellery Export Promotion Council visited Sri Lanka from 5th September to 8th September,2006 to coincide with FACETS show at Colombo.
